June's Camp Nana
This book began as one family’s sentence and a photo. Yours starts the same way — we write and illustrate the whole thing, starring your person.
This is June’s book. Yours will be a different story entirely.
Somewhere ahead there’s a camper who’ll learn the rules from her.

Their tradition, made official
The week at Grandma’s becomes an institution with its own flag and its own laws — a personalized storybook built from the ritual your family already has.

The small rules that raise them
“At Camp Nana, fireflies always go free.” Every page keeps one of the little laws a grandmother teaches without ever calling it teaching.

And then she leads
On the last night the camper picks the adventure — and Nana follows her into a tent for the first time in her life. That’s the page grandmothers read twice.
One sentence became all of this.

“Every summer she comes to Camp Nana: pancakes, puddle-jumping, and one big adventure of her choosing.”
…and it became

What the parent said
She knows every rule by heart now and says them back to me. “Fireflies go free” is her favorite. She’s already picking next summer’s last adventure.
Questions, answered
Who made this book?
This one began in our studio, from a line in our request book — a grandma whose granddaughter comes to “Camp Nana” every summer: pancakes, puddle-jumping, and one big adventure of her choosing.
Why did they want it?
To show what one sentence about a family ritual becomes — the flag, the rules, and the night the camper takes over.
How was it made?
PlotJoys is a virtual story studio: a team of specialists — not one program doing everything. Story specialists work up directions from the family’s one-sentence idea and settle on the one that fits; a writer writes the book spread by spread; an art director and illustrators draw every page, keeping the child’s face consistent from the uploaded photo. The family can change anything until they love it.
What is PlotJoys?
PlotJoys turns your family’s own story into an heirloom storybook you direct. Bring a rough idea, a few lines, or a whole story page by page, and a photo of each hero. A virtual studio of story specialists writes and illustrates it from scratch: your loved ones, drawn from their photos, up to four, pets included. Change anything until you love it.
How is PlotJoys different from other personalized books?
Most personalized books are a template: the child’s name dropped into a fixed story, or their photo pasted into one, and every family gets the same plot. At PlotJoys nothing exists until you share your story: a rough idea, a few lines, or the whole thing. The plot, the words and every illustration are made from scratch for your people, up to four of them, a grandparent or the dog included, and you change anything until you love it. The fastest way to feel the difference is Discover, where each finished book shows the parent’s prompt beside the pages it became. For the full comparison, with the big makers named, read our buyer’s guide.
How much do I need to write?
As much or as little as you like. A rough idea is plenty: give us the people, the moment and the feeling. A few lines is great. A whole story worked out page by page is welcome too — send it along and we build from it. Up to four heroes in one book, pets included. More than four, or a long outline? Email pj@plotjoys.com.
How does it work, and how do you keep the quality high?
A book written and drawn about your own family used to be a commission: a writer, an illustrator, and a price few families could pay. My virtual story studio is what puts it within reach. A few photos and a story idea, and it does the rest, the way a studio would rather than one program doing everything: concept, casting, wardrobe, props, world-building, writers, illustrators, even a child-development check that the words fit the age. Each job has a specialist built for it, and one job is only continuity: the child on page twelve is the child on page one, and the sweater and the kitchen window stay put. The hero is drawn once from your photo, and the photo is the truth. Every page is counted before a book is released, and before a hardcover prints a person looks at the art at full size. If anything is off, change it: unlimited edits, or your money back before it prints. I’m a math PhD who led AI teams for a decade, and a mom; the bar is mine. — Dao, founder
Who can be in the book?
Anyone you love, up to four in one book. Usually a child, but plenty of our books star a grown-up — a mum on her birthday, a dad’s first year of being a dad, a couple on their anniversary. Grandparents, aunts, uncles and godparents are drawn in beside them. Dogs, cats and well-loved stuffies count too; send their photo with the rest of the cast. We write for the age of whoever the book is for — first-birthday books, toddler favorites, early readers, and up. Need more than four? Email pj@plotjoys.com and we’ll work it out.
What happens to the photos I upload?
One use: making your stories. Your photos become your characters and your illustrations — nothing else. And our founder holds every technology and third-party vendor inside the studio to the same rule: story-making only.
How long does it take to get my book?
Your digital book is ready within 1 business day — in time to show at the party or send the link to the family. The hardcover takes 2-3 weeks, and here's why: we hold no inventory. Nothing is printed until you've approved every page — about a week to make, then 1-2 weeks to reach you. So for a date next week, the digital book is the one that arrives in time, and the hardcover gets read in person after.
How much does a personalized storybook cost?
A digital book is $19. The premium hardcover keepsake is $59, includes the digital copy, and ships free in the US — about the size of a sheet of printer paper turned sideways, bigger than a standard picture book. Concierge, with a story specialist working alongside you, is $199. No subscription. Every option comes with unlimited revisions, or your money back before it prints. Full details on /pricing.
Can I see the whole book before I buy?
No — and that's the whole difference. There's no finished book on a shelf waiting for a name to be dropped in: nothing exists until you tell us your idea. What you can see first, free, is your star drawn as their character. The story itself is written for your family after you order — and then you change anything you like, with unlimited revisions or your money back.
What if I don't like something in the book?
Change it. A line, an illustration, the ending — unlimited revisions until you love it. If it's still not right, your money back.
Who is behind PlotJoys, and how long has it been around?
One founder: Dao — a mom first, and a math PhD who led AI teams for a decade. She made the first book for her own daughter in the summer of 2025, then for friends' kids, and PlotJoys grew from there: the same studio, now making books for families she's never met. She built it herself, grounded it in child-development research, teaches a weekly story program at Plano Day School, and keeps improving the studio with what families tell her. It's new — which is why nobody has ten years of reviews for it. What we can show instead: every book in Discover is one we made, 47% of families come back for a second, and a pre-K class gets a new one every Tuesday.
What makes a good personalized storybook gift?
The best personalized storybooks go beyond inserting a name. Look for three things: the child illustrated as the hero and recognizably them, a story tailored to their interests and personality, and quality illustrations and narrative. With PlotJoys, the gift-giver directs the story — 'she loves dinosaurs and is learning to share' becomes a unique adventure starring their child.

Every summer, June comes to stay a whole week. This is no ordinary visit. This is Camp Nana.
Nana pulls the rope. Up, up, up goes the flag. 'Camp is in session!'
Grandpa comes around the porch. He stops. He salutes. He walks on. (He always does.)
Morning one. A stack as tall as June's nose. 'At Camp Nana,' says Nana, 'pancakes come first.'
Then the rain came down and down. 'At Camp Nana,' says Nana, 'puddles are for jumping.'
Jumping makes socks very, very wet. 'At Camp Nana, wet socks go on the line.'
After lunch, the hammock swings and swings. 'At Camp Nana,' says Nana, 'the hammock counts as a nap.'
When the yard went dark, tiny lights came out. June caught one — then let it fly. 'At Camp Nana, fireflies always go free.'
On the last morning, Nana knelt down. 'One more rule — the oldest of all. At Camp Nana, the camper picks the last adventure.'
June thought and thought. Then she pointed. 'The tent. All night.' Nana blinked. She had never slept in a tent — not once, not ever.
But a rule is a rule. As the sun went down, up went the tent. Grandpa shuffled by in his pajamas — stopped, and saluted.
June crawled in first. Nana squeezed in after, flashlight and all. The whole camp fit inside one little tent.
In the glow, June said them all back. 'Pancakes first. Puddles for jumping. Wet socks on the line. The hammock's a nap. Fireflies go free.'
Nana smiled. 'You know it all by heart.' 'There's a new rule,' whispered June. 'At Camp Nana, Nana sleeps in the tent.' And she did.
Camp Nana is closed — see you next summer. On the wall, the newest picture hangs crooked. Below it, the flag rests folded, and waits.
